Video Toaster "4.3" Bundle Pack "Readme"
/C. Baker/ Copyright 1999, NewTek, Inc.
Introduction:
NewTek now provides CD-ROM-install versions of both 3.5 and 4.2
software to purchasers of the Video Toaster and Flyer. Video
Toaster 3.5 offers excellent live-switching capabilities, and is
compatible with many of the edit controllers popular for linear
editing. Video Toaster 4.2 is our non-linear editing software,
with enhanced CG, LightWave and ToasterPaint, plus "slideshow"
playback of framestores and effects on Toaster-only systems.
Many long-time Video Toaster users have kept 3.5 software, even
after upgrading to 4.2, because of its utility in live operations
and linear editing. Because of differences in the libraries used
by the two versions, the user needed to implement workarounds to
place the correct libraries before running the Toaster software.
We have resolved that issue for this distribution, and the user
can simply run the selected version of the software, and the
correct libraries will automatically be placed.
Installation Notes:
The user must have a CD-ROM drive installed and active in order
to use the installation CD. Users who wish to mount the CD-ROM
on the Flyer SCSI C chain will first need to purchase and install
AsimCDFS on their Amiga system.
You may install one or both of the versions of the software. If
you plan to install both, you should install the 3.5 version
first, then install the 4.2 version. If you will be installing
using a CD-ROM attached to the Flyer SCSI C chain, then you will
need to install 4.2 first to activate the CD-ROM support.
Startup icons:
The Video Toaster 3.5 and 4.2 versions have very different
"StartToaster" icons. You will find the icons for launching 3.5
in the root directory of the drive to which the 3.5 "Toaster"
drawer was installed. The 3.5 icon is a predominantly blue and
black image of a broadcasting tower.
The StartToaster icons for 4.2 are located in NewTek/Programs
drawer, are identifiable by a winged logo, and will say either
Toaster or Flyer on the logo, depending on whether you have a
Toaster-only system, or a Flyer system. The 4.2 icons represent
ARexx scripts that place the proper software libraries, and
launch the 4.2 software.
3.5 StartToaster Icons:
You will note that there are two StartToaster icons for the 3.5
software. These icons place the correct libraries, and select
the version of LightWave that will be active during the current
work session.
StartToasterLW32: Sets LightWave 3.2 Layout and Modeler 3.1 as
the active versions of LightWave for the current work session.
Lightwave 3.2 offers custom resolution up to 8000 x 8000 pixels,
and will render a high-resolution picture in relatively limited
RAM, by rendering the image in multiple segments. An FPU is
required to use this version of the software. We have supplied
this for those who may need to do occasional print resolution
work, but have limited RAM.
StartToasterLW3.5: Sets LightWave 3.5 Modeler and Layout as the
active versions for the current work session. Can be used on
both FPU and non-FPU equipped machines. Offers custom image
sizes, but requires RAM or virtual RAM in sufficient quantity to
buffer the entire image.
LW 3.5 also uses additional parameters in object files, which
were not present in earlier versions of LightWave, so objects
created in 3.5 may not be backwards compatible with earlier
versions. We have included a utility to "fix" objects created in
3.5 so that they may be used in 3.1 if needed. The program is
called LWObjectfixer, and is located in the Toaster/Utilities
drawer. (Thanks to James G. Jones for providing this utility!)
4.2 StartToaster Icons:
You will find three different StartToaster icons in the drawer
NewTek/Programs. Two of these are special launchers that will
change the active version of LightWave, selecting either 4.0 or
5.0 as active. These need only be run when you wish to change
active LightWave. If you are not switching versions of LightWave
from your last work session, then use the plain StartToaster
icon, and it is the one you should leave out on your Workbench.
StartToaster: sets the proper Postscript libraries for CG, and
launches the Toaster software.
StartToasterLW4: makes the LightWave 4.0 executables and
configuration files active, and launches the Toaster software.
StartToasterLW5: makes the LightWave 5.0 executables and
configuration files active, and launches the Toaster software.
LightWave 5.0 has additional features as compared to 4.0, but
does have a bug that does not allow the user the go between
Layout and the Switcher screen more than a couple of times. A
third exit to the Switcher will cause a crash. If the user must
exit to Switcher, then the user should first save the objects in
Modeler and the objects and scene in Layout. Upon exiting to the
Switcher screen, the user should unload LightWave by holding down
the shift key while selecting LightWave on the Tools menu popup.
One the user has completed any necessary tasks in the main
Toaster software, the user can then reload LightWave, and reload
the scene to resume work in Layout and Modeler.
Files to check for:
Libs: should contain post3.library and psnf3.library, if 3.5
has been installed. Should contain post4.library and
psnf4.library if 4.2 has been installed. If both are installed,
all these must be present.
Note: The "Bigfoot" utility is present as an executable install
archive. No icon shows when the CD is viewed on an Amiga. The
CD can be read on your PC, and the file can be copied to your PC
hard drive and executed from there, to install the utility. A
readme file for Bigfoot is also on the CD.
